How Are Sanitary Pads Made?

It’s that time of the month again, and I can’t help but wonder how menstrual periods are a significant part of a woman’s life. During this time, feminine hygiene products like pads are heavily used. This made me wonder about how sanitary pads are actually made. After a little research, I understood all that goes into making sanitary pads.

Sanitary pads were initially made of simple cotton. However, over the years, there has been immense evolution in the production of sanitary pads. Brands have introduced better quality materials that can hold in the fluid for longer. The products are better developed, so women feel more comfortable while going about their daily activities. Good quality sanitary pads are made using the following process and components.

Topsheet: The topsheet is the layer felt against the skin. This sheet is made from a synthetic material that safety absorbs the menstrual discharge and transfers onto the core of the pad. Topsheets keep away the moisture from building and reduce the risk of developing vaginal infections. Synthetic topsheets are made from fibres that are used in garments.

Secondary topsheet: A secondary topsheet is added for better absorption of the fluid. It also aids in reducing wetness on days of heavy discharge. Again, the secondary topsheet is made from synthetic fibres.

Absorbent core: The absorbent core is the most crucial component in the pad and holds in the liquid. It allows for no stress period days. The absorbent core is made with soft cotton. However, manufacturers have now begun to use unique absorbent cores that are made from cellulose and gel pearls. Both the components quickly absorb the liquid and lock it in. This kind of core is also very flexible, and thus, it allows for better movement with the risk of leakage.

Odour Neutralizing Technology: The odour neutralizing technology is part of the absorbent core. It is an exclusive material that has a very light scent. This scent is similar to everyday perfumes and is applied to the bottom of the absorbent core. It keeps away the odour of period blood and brings an excellent fresh feel.

Backsheet: The backsheet is yet another vital component used in making sanitary pads. It is the layer that sticks on the panty and is made from synthetic materials. Again, this material is made from the same synthetic fibres used for making garments. This last layer is moisture-proof and essentially keeps the menstrual flow from transferring onto the clothes.

Adhesive: Adhesive is applied on the back of the last sheet, and It helps keep the pad in place.

It is imperative to use sanitary pads that are produced by renowned brands. Sanitary pads from well-known brands undergo numerous quality standard checks before being placed on shelves. They are rigorously checked to ensure that there is no risk of vaginal infections or other medical conditions. Thus, make sure that you only use pads from quality brands.
